The Dirge of the Wound

The Boast of the Wound

Sting
Sting
Sting
Press me down
If you can
Make me disappear
Underneath the clods
Forget me, that I even exist
Remain at ease
Take this blanket
I call it false security
Be wrapped in its warmth
Till the next pressure comes
Then it squeezes
Suffocates
Remember me?!
Your dear wound
You felt my sting
I’m still here
Down beneath
The layers of your cleverness
So long as there is life
And you struggle against your Lord’s death
For I am here with you
Till death do us part—
The death of the cross
Would be my only defeat
And so I remain here
Stinging
Stinging
Stinging
Singing my song of sensitivity
I won’t let you forget

The Dirge of the Wound

Oh! What is this I see?!
A strong wood
Hammering down on me
Deeper
Deeper
Ever deeper
Are you trying to uproot me?!
I’m your wound!
Do not let yourself forget!
Oh! What is this I see?!
This wood releasing blood
The Divine Blood of your Savior
It flows and slowly
Washes me away
But I’m your wound!
I’m your sting!
Do not let yourself forget!
All the wrongs and hurts against you
Remember
I have them numbered!
Remember your rights?!
Your ego, your glory?!
What about your position?!
Your honor, your place?!

Alas, the blood suffocates me,
I who was your sting
Liberated from my grip
You are indeed coming to be
Released from my chains
I can no longer sting
Sting
Sting
I was your wound
Now put to death
No longer to exist
Neither beneath the clods
Nor ever in your land
You have married your land—
Beulah they call it—
To your Beloved Savior
My only fear and defeat

Now I tell a story
For me it was of defeat
Yet for you:
Freedom, they call it
I know no such thing
For freedom cannot exist
Where I fester and sting
Sting
Sting

The Song of the Redeemed

Oh stinging wound
Let me now tell you
For a time I was deceived
For you are clever
Like your cunning master
But my Master and Savior
He is the Victor
He knows no defeat
And in Him I abide
Choosing to face you
With His mighty cross
Hammer
Hammer
Hammer
O cross
Ever deeper into my inner land
Here these evil weeds
Do not belong
My enemy has no place in me
For I am redeemed
You have purchased my land
And it You are cleansing
Weeding out the vices
Every evil root
Till You indeed make me
Holy and pure
A land likened to Paradise
Where You love to dwell
For I am my Beloved’s
And my Beloved is mine.
